The Forward Engineering Collective works together to advance four collective actions. By focusing our attention in these key areas we can overcome many of the barriers that limit youth and children from fully engaging in an exploration of engineering.

Inspire connection

We’re reframing engineering to be seen as a welcoming and inclusive profession that is accessible to everyone. By creating relatable and positive narratives about engineering, we aim to change perceptions and help all students see a place for themselves in this field.

  • Perception of engineering as male-dominated and centered on building and construction
  • Misconceptions about the engineering profession

Drive inclusion

We’re removing obstacles and expanding access so that every student, regardless of their background, has the chance to pursue engineering. This involves addressing systemic barriers and providing support where it’s needed most.

  • High school course prerequisites (e.g., physics)
  • Socio-economic barriers

Showcase engineering

We’re making engineering visible and relatable by sharing real stories and experiences. By showcasing diverse role models and providing early exposure, we aim to ignite interest and confidence in engineering from a young age.

Barriers addressed:

  • Insufficient mentorship and role models
  • Lack of early exposure to engineering
  • Lack of confidence and self-efficacy in STEM subjects

We’re building stronger support systems and educational resources to ensure all students can engage effectively with engineering. By addressing gaps in curriculum and teacher support, we aim to foster a more robust and inclusive STEM ecosystem.
